The signature guide

The Ripeness Signal Guide

Standing at the stall, what should you actually look at, press for, and smell? Grove Ledger answers per fruit and per stage — because a good early peach and a good late peach give away completely different cues.

Stage oneEarly season
Look

Even blush, taut skin. Colour is arriving but not full — a hint of green at the stem is fine this early.

Press

Firm with a whisper of give. It should resist your thumb and spring back.

Smell

Faint and green. Little aroma yet; let it rest a day or two at home.

Stage twoPeak season
Look

Deep, saturated colour. Skin is glossy and the fruit feels heavy for its size.

Press

Yields gently all over. A soft, even give near the stem means it is ready today.

Smell

Sweet and unmistakable. The aroma reaches you before you lift it — buy it now.

Stage threeLate season
Look

Rich colour, small blemishes ok. Character over cosmetics as the window closes.

Press

Soft, choose carefully. Skip anything mushy or bruised; eat these the same day.

Smell

Intense, almost jammy. Peak fragrance — wonderful fresh, ideal for cooking.

Scan a fruit, read its ripeness

On iOS with Apple Intelligence, point your camera at a fruit — or pick a photo you already have — and Grove Ledger reads where it sits on the ripeness curve: under-ripe, ripe, at its peak, or just past its best. You get a plain-language verdict, a tip for picking a good one, and a sense of when to eat it.

The photo is read entirely on your device — an on-device colour analysis paired with Apple Intelligence writing the verdict on-device. Nothing is uploaded, and the image is not kept once the scan is done.

Deep, even colour and a gentle give all over — this one is sweet and ready right now.

Pick tip — choose fruit that feels heavy for its size and smells fragrant at the stem.

Your grove and your price ledger

Two personal spaces that stay entirely on your device, growing more useful every season you use them.

A grove of your favourites

Save the fruit you love into your own grove and jot tasting notes as you go — which market stall, which variety, how sweet it turned out. Next year the notes are waiting when the season comes round again.

Aug 2 — Sun Gold apricots, corner stall. Honey-sweet, best I've had this year.

A ledger of what you paid

Log the price of a fruit each time you buy it and Grove Ledger charts it across the seasons, then highlights the weeks it tends to cost you the least — your own best buying windows, drawn only from your own entries.
